Vejonis said Azerbaijan was an important partner of Latvia, and the relationship is close and friendly. Before the press conference signed a Declaration on strategic cooperation, which Vejonis considers a very important impulse for the development of cooperation.
The branch also signed cooperation agreements in education, transportation and supervision of construction. The President stressed that these agreements will deepen bilateral relations, as scheduled for today the Latvian-Azerbaijani business forum and frequent visits of the officials allow us to hope for the strengthening of economic cooperation.
At the same time, he expressed support for the strengthening of relations between the EU and Azerbaijan, the important role played by the Eastern partnership as a flexible framework that allows each country to form such a deep relationship with the EU as it wishes.
Vejonis said Azerbaijan was an important partner for the EU in the field of energy and transport. "We therefore appreciate the role of Azerbaijan in southern gas corridor project and contribution to the diversification of energy supplies", - said the President.
He believes that the upcoming November summit of the Eastern partnership will be a good opportunity to find new and mutually beneficial directions of cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan.
The presidents also discussed issues of democracy and human rights in Azerbaijan. Vejonis called on Aliyev to continue the work on strengthening the principles of democracy. He also expressed support for the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
