A proposal to double the European quota was made by the UN high Commissioner for refugees Filippo Grandi. At the same time, a prerequisite for such a step, according to Merkel, is the strengthening of control over illegal migration.

50 million for the fight against illegal migration

The Chancellor also announced that Berlin will provide the Office of the UN high Commissioner for refugees (UNHCR) and International organization for migration (IOM), about 50 million euros to the end of the year on their activities in Libya, in particular, against gangs of smugglers in the Mediterranean sea and the factors that cause migrants to travel to Europe.

In mid-2015, the EU agreed on an annual distribution of 20 thousands of legitimate refugees in the context of the "resettlement" of the UN. Under this Treaty, Germany undertakes to take 1600 migrants per year.
