The Museum staff and visitors have detained a man who managed to inflict two scratches on the canvas with a sharp object, presumably a screwdriver. Vandal has damaged the paint, but the canvas remained intact.
The incident occurred in the afternoon of March 18. According to unconfirmed reports, the attacker said that he had a bomb and he blows up the gallery. The detainee was a 63-year-old Keith Gregory without a certain residence.
London police have charged the detainee intentionally causing property damage, reports the Russian service of the BBC. The painting after the attack was removed from exposure. Now restorers will assess the damage caused to him.
The painting "Morning walk" was painted by Thomas Gainsborough in 1785. The national gallery bought it for his exhibition in 1954, paying 30 thousand pounds.
