The working group meeting takes place on the eve of international railway workers ' Day and in the eve of the meeting of the intergovernmental Commission of Latvia and Russia, which will take place in mid-August.
"For us it is very important that Russian Railways has accepted our invitation to meet and discuss cooperation in the sphere of development of cargo transportation right now, because in recent years we are seeing a decline in turnover. Cooperation with Russian Railways Latvian Railways has always been very important, and we hope that today's talks will contribute to improve cooperation and increase of goods. Russia remains a major partner in the field of freight transport and the meeting of the working group will help to better prepare for the meeting of the intergovernmental Commission of Latvia and Russia, which is very important for future cooperation between our countries", — said the President of Latvian railway the European Commission.
Vice-President of RZD Pavel Ivanov: "Since 2008, when it created the working group, we have come a long way. Our cooperation has a lot of common ground in which we can develop and improve it to achieve our common goals. Should be noted the excellent organization of the working group and the fruitful work in preparation of our agreement".
The parties agreed to continue cooperation in order to increase the volume of transported goods from India and China, and other Eurasian countries in the transport corridor North–South with the use of railway infrastructure in Latvia and Russia. The parties also agreed to continue active cooperation to attract passenger traffic in railway communication between Russia and Latvia.
Experts of both countries agreed on the need of active cooperation on the development of border railway infrastructure, to increase transport efficiency in the future. In particular, the parties discussed the possibility of attracting European Union funding under the cross border cooperation programme between Latvia and Russia.
Russia is the largest supplier of cargo transported by LDz infrastructure. Of the transported in 2016 47,8 million tons to 79.2% of the Russian cargoes.
