According to the researchers, usually large polynyas are formed relatively close to the border of the ice and sea, but a new formation is located a few hundred kilometers from the line. This indicates that it was the result of some unknown processes.
Polynya appeared in early September in the heart of the Sea Weddel. However, the hole in the ice crust was observed before. So, in the 70-ies of XX century in the same place there was another hole, but due to lack of satellite surveillance she was left unexplored. Over the next 40 years the ice cover of the sea remained in one piece.
The researchers believe that it is premature to say that the hole in the sea ice originated from global climate change. But we already know that ice affects the convection in the sea, bringing warm water will rise to the surface and can prevent the disappearance of the hole.
