The Ministry of defence submitted for consideration at the government meeting on 28 November, the draft resolution of the Seimas on the participation of members of the National armed forces (NAF) of Latvia in military operations of the international coalition against the "Islamic state" to train military forces in Iraq until February 1, 2020.

From November 2014, Latvia joined politically to the international coalition and expressed support for its actions.

The Iraqi government confirmed that it supported the participation of Latvian military instructors to train Iraqi security forces.

14 January 2016, the Sejm decided to send Latvian soldiers to participate in the operation until February 1, 2018.

Now in operation as part of the Danish contingent participating to 10 of the Latvian military instructors.
