Here is an excerpt from an interesting article about "Sardine", published on the website "Meduza": "the Trick is that the first bestseller for nearly 45 years - he published in 1972. The second was written two years later, however, publish his books in Russian language only now. In 1978, the famous science fiction writer Michael Moorcock wrote an essay, "Epic Pooh," in which, in particular, spoke out against rabbits. "It seems," he wrote, " that a good part of the English fantasy written by rabbits, about rabbits and for rabbits." In it, he not only reproached Milne, Tolkien and cs Lewis for their distinct nostalgia for the gold of England, marred by romanticism and dominance in their books speaking of furry creatures, but pass on the novel by Richard Adams, "the Inhabitants of the hills". Almost tenderly he spoke of another novel by Adams - "Serdika", dubbed his novel about the "down-the Martyr" and bringing its contents to the next: "a novel about a bear who died for our sins". In this essay, however, readers may surprise something else - not what the Moorcock for some reason does not like rabbits, and that Richard Adams and his books for Moorcock (despite the fact that, since the publication of the "Serdika" at the time of the first edition of the essay it's only been 4 years) - is already quite an accomplished literary phenomenon. One can argue about it with him may not agree, but Adams - with its anthropomorphic bestiary - for only some six to eight years firmly in the history of English literature. We have the same Adams is known only as the author of a novel about rabbits, though he considers his best novel is "Serdika" that now - 22 years later after the release in England was translated and published with us. What is important is whether "Shardik" so far? No doubt. If you know about Richard Adams about the same as on a Fox - that is, a little, and not all of it is possible to miss a significant part of English cultural code - are not only modern, but also historical. "Shardik" - with all the signs of a science fiction novel - in fact, something like a Handbook of basic moves of world literature. Adams is a big fan of Joseph Campbell and his book hero with a thousand faces" - collects novel in his drawings: with an epic hero, a relay of plot obstacles, serious problems, and one very angry bear..."
