In 2016, the IB continued with the screening of foreigners wishing to obtain a residence permit in exchange for investments in Latvia. Last year in Latvia was issued 1864 such a residence permit, of which 673 — for the first time, 1191 — again for five years.
Most foreigners remain interested in the opportunity to obtain a residence permit in exchange for investments in real estate. However, from 1597 query primary last year was only 514. In 2016, was also sought 115 (85 initial) residence permits in exchange for investments in the fixed capital of the enterprises, 112 (37) in the subordinated capital of the Bank, 38 (37) in interest-free government securities.
Assessment of PB, the activity of foreigners in investing in Latvia last year was influenced mainly changes in the economic situation and legislation in Russia. Despite this, most of the residence permits in exchange for investments in Latvia are requesting are still citizens of Russia. Last year there was 1 340 (72% of all applicants). Second place on this indicator is occupied by citizens of Ukraine, the third — Kazakhstan. Followed by citizens of China, Uzbekistan and several other countries.
In 2016, the IB proposed to issue a residence permit to foreigners and 30 to cancel it at 11 foreigners. In 46% of cases were identified the risks of their involvement in the activities of foreign intelligence services, in 22% of cases — economic risks, for example, suspicion of legalization of criminally obtained funds. In 32% of cases were identified other threats to national security.
