At the upcoming March 17-18 meeting of the European Council Latvia will be represented by the Prime Minister Maris Kuchinskis.
One of the issues on the agenda of the meeting of the European Council will be migration issues.
As reported, the national state's position provides that Latvia supports the need for immediate response to new waves of migration.
Latvia considers it important to implement measures aimed at the resumption of the operation of the Schengen agreement, including the provision of additional assistance to Greece. This includes managing the external border of the EU identification, registration and verification of migrants, as well as the return of all illegal migrants not needing international protection, and strengthening of the asylum system.
Latvia intends to support the activities of the European Agency for the management of operational cooperation at the external borders of the EU and European support office in the field of asylum, as well as the creation of the emergency for use in the EU.
Latvia confirms its readiness to fulfil commitments on the movement of asylum-seekers in need of international protection.
At the meeting of the Council of Europe must also come to mutually acceptable agreement between the EU and Turkey, according to the position of Latvia.
